Make Social Technology Count in Your Workplace

Make Social Technology Count in Your Workplace
A friend, who was involved in developing early word processing systems (imagine a world without Microsoft Office or Open Office), was recently talking about the productivity-improvement claims made by proponents of word processing. I’m like WHAT decade are we in? Smiles. I’m GASPing for air. By moving offices and workers away from typewriters, Dictaphone machines and stenography, businesses were supposed to see huge productivity gains. Individuals would be empowered and secretaries (try finding a few of those today) would have time to work on projects of higher value to companies. There would be no reliance on White-out, steno pads or other mostly-dead products and everyone would be freed from the drudgery of office work. The payoff for companies? The holy trinity of time-savings, cost-reduction and ROI!

What really happened? We all – more or less willingly – took on responsibility for our own busy work, and a whole work classification was eliminated. There are no “secretaries” any more – Phew. There are a few executive assistants, reserved mostly for the V and C-suite. This is something my baby boomer friend regrets; early in his career he had a secretary, Jean, who could type 105 words a minute with no errors and take dictation at 90 words a minute. She kept his schedule, remembered everything, and shielded him from useless meetings and other distractions. Now he’s on his own, working without a net, like most of us, in a world where notions of value have changed. What gives?

We’re seeing a similar shift now in the world of work with social technologies and social media tools. From Yammer to wikis, talent management software and enterprise instant-messaging platforms like Salesforce Chat and Microsoft Lync, businesses are structuring a workplace where most interchanges are not person-to-person but are instead mediated by technology. This shift has been valued at upwards of $1.3 trillion by no less an authority than McKinsey , which studied the use and impact of social tech in four sectors: professional services, retail financial services, packaged goods and advanced manufacturing.

Not surprisingly, McKinsey sees a large percentage of the value of social tech coming from two sources: improved communications and collaboration. These benefits will be realized internally, as employees collaborate, and externally, as consumers interact with brands.

But value isn’t something you get by buying technology, closing your eyes and making a wish. Value is real only if it can be measured. Further, it’s arguably possible to extract value from technology only when your work culture understands and accepts the reasoning for adopting the technology, which requires employees to trust the company and its managers. Without trust, in other words, value cannot be calculated.

So leaders and employees unite and celebrate! Here are five things to put in place if you hope to extract value from social technology in your workplace:

1) Define what value means to your organization. For example, is there more value in social tech-mediated collaboration than there is in face-to-face meetings? In which circumstances or use cases is the statement true or false? At which employee grade is it true or false? Is your notion of value organizational (e.g., human factors), financial (e.g., measureable ROI) or process (e.g., time savings)? Create different timelines for each vector to see where you’ll experience a value bump first.

2) Create a value measurement methodology. If you’re measuring collaboration, for example, tie hard costs to it: less travel, less time to complete a task, more people on board with an idea or initiative.

3) Determine which tools, processes and policies support your definition of value, and which must be changed. Email may not support your definition of value in the above model, nor may in-person meetings. Processes designed to support building teams will need to be revised so teams can be constructed virtually among people who’ve never met F2F. Policies requiring performance reviews to be conducted by team members may need to be adjusted, and so on. This may requires a close look at many policies, which is time-consuming; factor that into your value equations.

4) Create a link between your notion of value and the value of employee trust. This will be tough, but one place to start is to create a value statement describing the organizational value of employee trust. Then look for the deltas in your model of the value of social tech. You may want to bring in an HR or organizational consultant to help structure the examination if you need help from the outside.

5) Socialize your expectations of the value to be realized from social technology. Poll employees to see if they buy in. If they don’t, you’ll gain not only understanding of why there may be resistance to using social tech tools, as well as a roadmap of policies and procedures which may require change for the organization to realize value from social tech.

We’re just beginning to see the disruptive effects of social technology and social media at large. Very exciting times in the world of work. Will it destroy whole job categories? It remains to be seen. Will it deliver value? I vote yes.

What about you? Is your leadership or employee style one the embraces parts or all of this?

Know To Increase Traffic Through These 10 Ways Of Twitter

Twitter provides a great platform through which you can increase your blog traffic.  Many people know this yet they fail to actually take full advantage of it. Here are 10 ways that you can do this without
being viewed as a spammer.

1.) Send out short tips about a topic covered on your blog and include a url to one of the posts.  This is great because people who read your tips will be interested in learning more and many of them will click the link and visit your blog.

2.) Set up your blog posts to automatically post to twitter. You can do this with the wordpress blogging plugin called twitter tools or with the networked blogs application on facebook. The second one posts your blog posts to facebook and then also to twitter.

3.) Look for people who are tweeting about the same topics your blog covers and follow them and then share specific blog posts with them.

4.) Use the twitter search feature at search.twitter.com to located people asking questions about topics related to your blog and then reply back to them by answering their question and referring to a blog
post.
Know To Increase Traffic Through These 10 Ways Of Twitter

5.) Include your blog url as your website url on your twitter profile and include the link on your twitter profile background.

6.) Convert the content of some of your posts into audio and then share these audios with your followers via the audioboo application. People who may not read your posts, will listen to them.

7.) Do a search for lists on twitter. Find lists that cover topics you also talk about on your blog and then share your blog posts with the people on that list.

8.) Install the tweetmeme button application on your blog to encourage people to share your blog posts on twitter.

9.) Propose a share on twitter exchange with a few other blog owners. You tweet their posts and they tweet yours.

10.) Encourage your blog readers to connect with you on twitter. This increases the likelihood that they will come back and share your posts.

News:Facebook to undergo privacy checks for 20 years

WASHINGTON: Social networking giant Facebook will be subjected to two decades of regular privacy checkups and other penalties, as part of a settlement finalised by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

News:Facebook to undergo privacy checks for 20 yearsThe FTC agreement implicated that Facebook must now obtain 'consent' before sharing a user's information with advertisers or others, which differs from its current privacy settings, and also bars the social site from misrepresenting its privacy and security practices again.

The settlement has the same outlines as the agreement, which FTC reached with Google in 2011 over that company's botched rollout of the Buzz social network, Politico reports.

The FTC faulted Facebook in 2011 for the way the company had handled users' private information, and allowed access of third-party apps.

Among other slip-ups, in December of 2009, Facebook changed its site in ways, which resulted in the private information of users being available to the public, the report said.

The FTC also charged Facebook with misrepresenting the sort of information that it shared with advertisers, and said that the social site wasn't clear with users about the fate of their photos and videos, upon deletion of their accounts, as some of the content didn't disappear, contrary to what the site states, it added.

NOTE:- Guys If you have got a mail from GMail you cant trace the sender Ip Address. Google says
Protecting our users' privacy is something we take very seriously. IP addresses can be considered sensitive information. As such, sender IP address information is not displayed in Gmail outgoing mail headers.
Don't worry -- we aren't enabling spammers to abuse the system by not revealing IP addresses. Gmail uses many innovative spam filtering mechanisms to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending bulk emails that arrive in users inboxes.

How To Use Multiple Login In Same Browser At A Time

Have you ever tried to get on more than one account of something like gmail, facebook, myspace, yahoo, etc.. on the same browser?  Well, you can’t do that because these kinds of sites store something called a cookie on your computer which allows you to be logged on to them.   The reason why you cant get on multiple accounts of a website is that only one cookie can be stored at a time.  But there is a simple way to get around this!

What You Will Need..

This works for any operating system that can work with the internet browsers Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

First and foremost, I’m going to say  you need internet.  After you got that settled, you need an internet browser.  There are only two that work for this because they are the only ones that work for this because they support addons.  They are Mozilla Firefox? and Google Chrome?.

After you have either one of those browsers installed, we will have to split this tutorial.  There will be two sections, one for Firefox and one for Chrome, with further instructions.

Mozilla Firefox..

If you have chosen to do this with Firefox, you will need to get an addon.  The addon is called “Coral IE Tab”.  What it does is it adds a feature to Firefox that allows it to make a new tab that runs like its a tab in Internet Explorer.  This tab can also have its own cookies.  Because the tab can do this, it can allow you to access another account of the same service in one browser.  Basically, you will have one account of, Gmail in example, open in a Firefox tab like normal, and then, you will open another account of Gmail in an Internet Explorer tab.

To do this, download the addon please click here?.

Once you have the addon installed, make sure you restart Firefox and then follow these steps…

Open a tab like normal and go to a site, i.e. Facebook, and log in.

Open another tab like normal but DO NOT go to any website on it.

Click the button that looks like a tab with an IE symbol on it.  This button is generally located next to the search box on the top of your browser.

Click For Full Size

After you click that button, the tab will change to an IE Tab.

Once the tab is changed, go to the same website that you logged onto before.  Once you go to it, you will be taken to the login page.  Once there, just login like normal and it should work.

Google Chrome..

If you have chosen Google Chrome, you will also need to get an addon. The addon is called “Classic IE Tab”.  This addon does the same thing that the addon in Firefox does.  It allows a tab to run Internet Explorer in Google Chrome.  This tab also allows you to store its own cookies so multiple accounts can work with it.  Basically, you can have an account of something open in one tab, i.e. Gmail, and then log into another account like Gmail in an IE Tab.

To download IE Tab for Google Chrome, please click here?.

Once you have the addon installed, make sure you restart Google Chrome and please follow these steps…

Open a tab like normal then go to a site, i.e. Facebook, and then log in.

Open another tab like normal but this time DO NOT go to any site.

Click the IE symbol.  This button is located in the address bar, on the far right-hand side.

Click For Full Size

After you click that button, that tab will turn into an IE tab and you will get a different address bar that will be located right under the bookmarks bar.

In that address bar, type in the same website that you logged into before and you will be taken to the login page.

Log into the site and it will work like normal.

If you have any problems, or questions about this, please send us an email.

If you have any comments, please leave one on this page.

Now Facebook Is Going To Ask For Phone Numbers For Users.

Hey Friends here's a good news for all the facebook user......
Soon, each network user of Facebook will be greeted with a notification message, which asked to provide a valid phone number. The action taken for reasons of security, is designed to prevent potentially dangerous situations in which a hacker manages to hijack and change user account password to block the victim’s own profile page.

Among others, the link above the News Feed section will provide a training guide for users to choose passwords safe and timely identification of fraud attempts, which may inadvertently provide access to account information on Facebook.

The emergency phone number can be used to reset the password if the user account is not accessible through Facebook ordinary means. The new security measure is taken to ensure a backup solution for large scale attack that hit the LinkedIn network, the identification data for not less than 6.5 million user accounts were published on the Internet.

In this situation, administrators can take to lock preventive Facebook user accounts compromised, thus preventing unauthorized access. Every Facebook user has supplied before the telephone number would then receive an SMS with a new password to access, randomly generated.

Other voices say, however, that Facebook administrators merely exploit people’s fears about security issues related to other social networks to create a database of phone numbers of users.

So friends now there is no any issue of getting hacked....

Facebook Ad Creator as a Mean of Marketing Targeting

Nowadays social networks are already an integral part of everyday life and community in general. They are really different, and involve extremely different strata of society – young and old, males and females, relatively rich and poor, and unite people of the same interests from the countries all over the world. It will not be an exaggeration if I tell that successful social networks have become one of the most interesting and perspective projects for businesses and recreation during the whole lifespan of Internet society. Also, it’s already not a secret that social networking is used to sell goods and services and to advertise them during many years, and this is the point we have to stop on and examine more thoroughly.

It is known to everyone that the most rich, most popular and most visited social network is Facebook. It is most widely used In the US, Canada, UK and all Europe, and also in many Asian countries. The results of advertising productsthrough Facebook have never been bad at all – because the amount of people who are watching the ads is so large that you cannot even imagine where such an ad should be, if you would decide to place it on some physical spot to be watched at. That’s why social networking advertisement is a great sector of advertisement in general, and people who invest money in it ultimately turn out to be smart when some time passes.
That’s why Facebook has provided a very useful tool for those businessmen who do understand the strategic meaning of social networking ads. This tool is called Ad Creator – a simple and perfect instrument for “smart” advertising.
If you haven’t noticed yet, a feature of Facebook ads is the following – they just work. Didn’t you ask yourself WHY social network advertisement is so effective? The answer is really simple. Ad Creator from Facebook team makes ads RELEVANT to users. In other words – it operates a cunning algorithm that scanspeople’s interests and hobbies, their searching habits, their localization and basing upon these and many other facts it starts showing people not the random, but the specialized ads which they really need to see.
A simple example – there is a person interested in notebooks. He often buys them, he follows the news of many manufacturers etc. You sell notebooks in your store, which is not far from that guy’s location. The search engine of Ad Creator browses the user’s interests, and he sees that the guy is interested in notebooks. And be sure – the next ad that guy will see will be your notebook store advertisement. And when he sees, that your location is really not far from his one – be sure that he will check out your store when he will be going to buy a new laptop for himself. Profit, isn’t it?
That is a very rough example. In real this system is much more complex and difficult, and it orients on the end user due to many factors. The trick is that it really works, and as for me – it’s quite a good option and alternative to traditional methods of advertisement.

Is Facebook thinking about Its Own Search Engine?

Search engine is a huge business and there is a lot of money to be made in it. Although Facebook now has a deal signed with Microsoft’s Bing search, it will eventually come up with its own version of personalized search. There are thousands of websites that have incorporated Facebook’s ‘Like’ button. Using the data collected from the ‘likes’ personalized search is possible. Since Facebook has hired around 200 people who used to work with Google, it is quite possible that Facebook has the intentions to design its own search engine.
Off late, there have been a lot of speculations about Facebook coming up with a search engine. Recently, the new Timeline feature has been introduced for brands and companies even pay more for their ads to be visible on users’ news feeds. Facebook can take advantage of content that is created on the site. It could log data about the pages its users have likes and interactions with brand pages. This data can be used to create personalized search results.
For example, if a user who has been reading a lot of reviews and articles about a particular car and has clicked the ‘Like’ button on them, when a keyword related to the car is searched, the search could be customized and information that interests him can be thrown up. The search results will also be based on the interests of friends of a user. Although this might be helpful to the person who is searching, there is a good chance that the search results would end up being too commercial and just pushing products rather than real information. It is also not sure if the user base would like something that is way too customized. It is pretty evident that no two people will have the same search results.
Although it seems to be a strategy that might work out, brands need to work on to optimize the search results too. Facebook wouldn’t want the user to leave the network and somehow try to incorporate the search engine into the social networking site as it is an irresistible opportunity with huge potential to generate revenue. If Facebook can play safe without losing its user base and figure out a way to implement the social search, huge amounts of cash is bound to flow in. Since Facebook has all the data about the users’ interests and their geo location, it sure has an advantage over other search engines.
